April Hale is originally from Tennessee, and now lives in Bozeman, Montana. She grew up making jewelry out of the dead birds she found in her backyard, and eventually she ended up at the Appalachian Center for Craft where she learned how to be a real metalsmith. She is currently enrolled in Montana State University’s Graduate Metalsmithing program. She continues to create jewelry based on the beauty she sees in the animals we accidentally kill. All of the bones in her jewelry are found – either roadkill or cow bones found in fields (don’t worry, she cleans them well!). When April is not creating memorials to our furry and feathered friends, she enjoys teaching, working in her garden, and going for walks with her goats.
